Drax Power Ltd operates the UK’s largest coal-fired power station, burning around 36,000 tonnes of coal per day when operating at full load.  In recent years, the station has embarked on an alternative fuels programme, successfully developing processes to burn a blend of coal and biomass materials.

Five SR Drive® systems of between 40kW and 160kW are employed, each direct-coupled to applications that in some cases previously required the use of problematic
fluid couplings.

90 metre long inclined belt conveyor is driven by a 160kW variable speed SR Drive® system.

As part of a £1 million investment in plant modifications, Drax Power Ltd has installed a fuel blending plant which allows a variety of alternative fuels to be accurately blended with the main coal feed.  Achieving this demanded drive systems that offer precise and infinitely variable speed control over the whole operating range of the conveyors. Drax Power Ltd selected Nidec SR Drives Manufacturing Ltd to provide the demanding drive solutions.

Five SR Drive® systems from 40kW to 160kW are employed on the blending plant. Two of these are drives on new installations and three are replacements for fixed speed induction motors.  Like many applications, the installation benefits from the exceptionally broad operating envelope of SR Drive® systems and their ability to maintain very high levels of operating efficiency throughout the operating range.
